A second chance

A second chance

This is a picture of my friend who in mid-October was in a horrific accident. Her car started to roll backwards in her driveway and she tried to stop it. She ended up being caught by the door as it started to go faster down a hill and the car hit a fence and pulled her under. She suffered 28 rib fractures, a shattered scapula, punctured lungs, a stroke and open sores on her feet from dragging on the ground (through boots). We were not that close of friends...more acquaintances, as our kids were in the same 1st grade class. Mark and I happened to hear what happened and went to visit her the second day in ICU. Nothing could have prepared us for the shape she was in. She was on a breathing tube, was restrained for trying to rip out tubes, and appeared to be on her death bed. She managed to scrawl on a piece of paper..."Help me....the boys." As I looked into her eyes, they welled up with tears and I promised her that I would help and make sure her two boys were taken care of. She stayed in ICU for two weeks and then was moved to the main hospital for the following two weeks. She was then in a rehabilitation center and finally went home in early December with outpatient therapy. She is now one of my best friends. She is a single mom who did not deserve this in her life....but I have now gained a life long friend. We had a sleepover with her and the boys this weekend and she took us to see her horses. She smiled as she brushed and fed them. It was such a cool thing to see.
